The Mission Position

I'm a New Yorker in San Francisco & I'm on an adventure. I have a B.Sc. in Neural Science; I like Chanel & DVF; I fence. I moved to SF from NYC in July 2010. I currently work at UCSF in the Department of Anatomy as a tech, researching epigenetic regulation in the olfactory system. When I am not playing with science I am exploring--San Francisco, art, food, people, design, words, music, yoga, flowers, fashion, myself ... Here is a presentation of what I find along the way. *Unless obvious credit is given, all photos and videos are mine.*

It’s been a good ride, but I have become too busy to continue this blog. Also, I moved out of the Mission so the name is no longer appropriate…

Thank you for being such wonderful followers and I will be sure to let you know if I start another blog in the future. In the meantime, here is a link to the archive of all posts I’ve done on The Mission Position: http://themissionposition.com/archive.

“The really important kind of freedom involves attention, and awareness, and discipline, and effort, and being able truly to care about other people and to sacrifice for them, over and over, in myriad petty little unsexy ways, every day.” - from David Foster Wallace’s This is Water commencement speech at Kenyon College.

Nuclear Aggregation of Olfactory Receptor Genes Governs Their Monogenic Expression

Click the title above to link to the new paper out of my lab at UCSF that was published today in Cell. The audio clip is an interview with my boss, Stavros Lomvardas, giving a brief introduction to this beautiful paper which details graduate student Josie Clowney’s work on profiling the nuclear architecture of olfactory sensory neurons.

  • Highlights
  • In olfactory neurons, OR genes converge in specialized heterochromatic foci
  • The active OR allele in each neuron is transcribed outside of these foci
  • Lamin B receptor (LBR) downregulation allows OR aggregation in olfactory neurons
  • Ectopic LBR expression disrupts OR foci and causes OR coexpression

So, Barack Obama is president for another 4 years (#2termz)… I’m pretty excited about this to say the least. Without having to worry about the prospect of another election, it will be very interesting to see what he does with this next term.

CA propositions: Democrats land the supermajority so they have the two-thirds advantage in both legislative houses going forward, meaning big changes coming for taxation and budgetary measures. Hurrah!; Education: 30 won, 38 lost (which is good since only one educational prop could be voted through and 30 was by far the better choice; way to go CA!); Auto-insurance discounts failed (yay! I won’t be charged more because I have no insurance history); Death penalty was not repealed (waste of money IMHO); Penalties increased for human trafficking (some controversy on whether the prop was too broadly worded and thus will turn out to be a big mistake); Three strikes law was revised (good!); Genetically modified foods won’t be labelled.

Rest of the country: Recreational marijuana legalized in 2 states (CO, WA) and medical marijuana legalized in 1 (MA); Support Citizens United (MT, CO); Legalize gay marriage (WA, MD, ME)!!!!!!!!; DREAM Act passed (MD)

Wow! My mother Heather Evans has really done a beautiful job creating the website for her new boutique hotel on the Caribbean island of Bequiahttp://www.sugarreefbequia.com/

With the help of interior designer Jonathan Berger and furniture sculptor Benjamin Eric Forgey, the transformation of this 65-acre plantation is definitely going to be jaw-dropping.

Check out the website (especially the new FAQ section) and the promotions (25% off if you book before the grand opening on 12/15/12)!

Also, if you want to keep an eye on what the creative process of launching such a unique and beautiful destination hotel is like, make sure to “Like” the Facebook page: Sugar Reef Estate.

Keep in mind, this is not a hotel for everybody. The “Not Your Typical Caribbean” tagline is true. Check out this hot or not test to see if you or someone you know might like it:
